Some of the more obvious benefits I have gained when I submit my blog to blog directories are the almost immediate backlinks I got to my blog. The result was that my websites became more "attractive" to search engines, which indexed them more readily and in turn caused them to achieve a higher ranking in search engine results pages. Search engines particularly value these links.
