Search engines particularly value these links. In most cases, search engines rank pages that have such links higher, since they are generally considered to be more worthy of linking to. This is actually how I got better results when I submit my blog to blog directories. The directory listings themselves don't actually generate more visitors. There is a bit of dispute about the proper number of blog directories to submit my blog to.
